Stop Aid Dependency in Africa.

Dear Friends.

Dead Aid

Dead Aid

Almost everyone will agree that anyone who has ever achieved something has never done it by perpetually relying on handouts.  In principle people need to be held accountable in order to establish their own fiscal discipline and growth in their lives. This is usually done through Investing and Trade.

Instead of always giving a man fish, show him how to catch the fish.

Why is Africa dependent on AID ? What has AID done for Africa over the past 50 years? These questions have been answered by Dambisa Moyo in the book DEAD AID.

This website has been created to allow a more centralized movement to stop AID and propose new and innovative solutions for Africa. Browse this website for more details about the curse of Aid Dependency and feel free to contribute to the discussion.

Dambisa has mentioned our Movement on Twitter encouraging you all to participate in creating awareness about the African Development Agenda.

    This is more of an “anti-movement” than a “movement.” Rather than urging people for inaction, you should be explaining how people in the West can better help end poverty and suffering in Africa. If it is not by giving money to aid organizations, explain where that money would be better spent. By simply urging inaction, you are encouraging us to wash our hands of our responsibility of helping those in need, which does nothing to help solve short-term or long-term problems in Africa. I understand that giving money to aid organizations does not help long-term problems, but I believe that saving a few thousand people of dying from malaria in Malawi cannot hurt things. I believe that ordinary citizens in countries like Malawi, where the average daily income is little more than 50 cents, would love to get a job with a hedge fund. But these people also would like to drink clean water and have food to eat. Seeing as I cannot start a hedge fund in Malawi, my next best option is to give them these basic supplies until their economic situation improves. Simply waiting for the situation to improve without helping them in the short-term is not a solution to poverty.

    @Phillip,

    Thank you for your concern, indeed it is people like you who are true friends of Africa.

    We have never argued against humanitarian AID even though it also does get squandered occasionally in the African context. It is Economic AID we are against.

    Please see the following statement and videos to clarify our argument. http://johnkaranja.com/2009/03/15/dambisa-moyos-dead-aid-the-true-story-of-economic-aid-to-africa/

    We will be updating the website with an Action plan.

    If you want to help Africans, support a business venture at http://www.kiva.org and urge all your friends to do so.
